IEDC Honors Outgoing Board Member

Alissa Sklar is the director of marketing for GIS Planning. She has extensive experience as a consultant, writer and educator in the fields of technology and communications. Dr. Sklar has a Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Massachusetts of Amherst, and has as worked closely with B2Bs and economic development agencies to assess, develop and implement social media strategies for business development.

Anatalio Ubalde, FM, Co-Owner/Co-Founder of GIS Planning, Inc. and ZoomProspector.com, retires from his post on the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Board of Directors after the maximum term allowable of eight years. The following press release was issued by IEDC in recognition of his service and support for the organization over the years. Departures were announced at IEDC's 2015 Annual Conference, which was held October 4-7 in Anchorage, AK.

“The profession and practice of economic development has become one of the most critical aspects to moving today’s complex global economy forward.  This is one reason why IEDC’s work is so important, and why I took great pleasure in serving on its Board of Directors,” said Ubalde. “While my Board tenure has ended, my support for the mission and dedication to providing quality information, education and outstanding development opportunities to our members and partners will remain part of my professional and personal agenda.”

Ubalde is an economic developer, entrepreneur, and patent-holder. He is CEO of GIS Planning Inc., an economic development internet company, of ZoomProspector.com, an online site selection platform, and of SizeUp, a small business intelligence service. Ubalde works with organizations throughout the nation to foster enhanced economic development strategies using Internet technology. His company’s economic development technology currently serves over 13,000 cities, including the majority of the 100 largest cities in the United States. GIS Planning’s ZoomProspector Enterprise web-based GIS product is the industry standard for site selection websites in economic development. For five years in a row, GIS Planning made the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing private companies in the U.S.

His work in geographic information systems, economic development and the Internet is featured in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Forbes, Fortune, Inc., and The New York Times. In 2009 he was named a Fellow Member of IEDC for achieving exceptional stature in the field of economic development.

In 2012 the US Small Business Administration (SBA) made SizeUp a strategic service to small businesses on the SBA website. In this same year, top executives from Google, Facebook, and Salesforce.com selected SizeUp and ZoomProspector.com services as the 1st and 2nd place award winners for online tools to create jobs and grow the US economy, recognizing them through the US Department of Commerce.

Ubalde is co-author of the book Economic Development Marketing (2013) and Economic Development Marketing: Present & Future (2008) with Eric Simundza, co-author of Economic Development Online (2011) with Andrew Krueger, and author of articles in Economic Development America, Economic Development Commentary and the Canadian Economic Development and Technology Journal. He is a highly sought after speaker on the subject of Internet, small business intelligence, and GIS strategies for effective economic development and has made presentations on these subjects throughout North America, Asia, and Europe.

Before GIS Planning he worked in local economic development with a focus on downtown revitalization, waterfront redevelopment, business attraction, local business support, and site selection assistance. He has a master’s degree in city planning from U.C. Berkeley.
